WASHINGTON, United States — WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Congress on Tuesday that the American military operation against Iran achieved its objectives, though he acknowledged Tehran still possesses a substantial number of drones.
Rubio testified during an open session that the strikes caused significant damage to Iran's military capabilities. He said the United States hopes to reach an agreement with Iran that would lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping lane.
If Iran continues to block the strait, the United States is prepared to take the same action to enforce what Rubio described as an effective blockade, according to his remarks.
Rubio said the Iranian administration has a fragmented structure and requires days to formulate a response. He expressed hope that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen.
On Iran's nuclear program, Rubio said Tehran has agreed to negotiate on some aspects but must abandon highly enriched uranium activities.
