TEHRAN, Iran โ A US official said approximately 1,000 ships have transited the Strait of Hormuz since a ceasefire with Iran took effect on April 8. The official told Al Jazeera that the waterway remains open for maritime transport, though decisions on whether to pass through rest with individual vessels.
The official said the ceasefire with Iran holds, but the United States will continue protecting its forces and maintaining the blockade on Iranian ports. President Donald Trump announced on April 12, 2026, that a blockade would be enforced on ships traveling to and from Iran.
Iran's government has called the US measures "piracy" and said it would press ahead with a permanent mechanism to control the Strait of Hormuz.
