DUHOK, Iraq โ The Duhok Antiquities Department said Wednesday that archaeologists uncovered an important site in the Akre district during excavations carried out ahead of a Kawa the Blacksmith statue project in the Seri Gri area of the city center.
Department director Beks Brefkani said the land had initially been set aside for the project, but early checks indicated an archaeological site beneath it. Antiquities and heritage teams in Akre then carried out excavations in coordination with the project contractor before foundation work began.
The digs uncovered an ancient press believed to have been used to produce the drink known as โhomaโ or โsuma,โ which was thought to be used in religious rituals. Researchers also identified a large press, stone steps, water channels and sections set aside for fire use.
Initial findings indicate the discovery dates to the second half of the first millennium BC.
