DOHA, Qatar — Qatar's Foreign Ministry summoned Iranian chargé d'affaires Mohsen Mohammad Kiani and handed him a protest note after a Qatari-owned LNG carrier, Al Rakiyat, was targeted near the Strait of Hormuz, the ministry said. It condemned the attack as a breach of international maritime security and regional stability, and demanded that Iran immediately halt actions threatening regional security, provide an urgent explanation and take steps to prevent similar incidents.
Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry also condemned Iran's targeting of the Saudi-flagged tanker Vadian in the Strait of Hormuz, describing the attacks as a threat to both international maritime security and global energy supply. Riyadh said the actions constituted a serious violation of international law and norms, including UN Security Council Resolution 2817.
The incident occurred despite temporary arrangements between the United States and Iran to protect maritime passage in the strait. The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of global oil trade passes, remains a critical corridor for world energy markets.
