VICTORIA, British Columbia โ The Canadian province of British Columbia is preparing to sue OpenAI, alleging that the company failed to report violent messages a ChatGPT user posted before carrying out a school shooting. Provincial officials said OpenAI did not forward the suspect content to authorities as required by law.
The provincial government said the omission allowed the attacker to plan the assault, citing investigative data showing that OpenAI did not flag the user's content in time. British Columbia's attorney general said preparatory work is continuing and that a filing will follow once the scope of the case is finalized.
Premier David Eby said artificial intelligence platforms must meet their obligations to report violent content. The province is also calling for stronger content-moderation duties for technology companies.
