Psychology expert Yelena Direnko has identified criticism, defensiveness, stonewalling, and contempt as the primary behaviors that erode interpersonal relationships.
Direnko noted that criticism becomes destructive when it shifts from addressing a specific behavior to launching a personal attack against an individual.
Defensiveness further hinders resolution when a person focuses on creating excuses or shifting blame rather than listening to the core issue.
Stonewalling, or the refusal to engage in dialogue, and contempt—which severely undermines trust and respect—are cited as critical indicators of a sign of relationship deterioration.
Additionally, the use of absolute language, such as "you always" or "you never," is highlighted as harmful because it transforms a specific discussion into a total condemnation of the person.
