Police arrest two in Baghdad over safe theft, three in Sulaymaniyah over drowning

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Police in Baghdad's Karkh district arrested two people with prior criminal records on suspicion of stealing a steel safe from a residence, recovering roughly 2 kilograms of gold jewelry and the stolen cash, the Karkh Police Command said. The command said a team from the Karkh Directorate's Hurriya branch was formed to investigate the case, and the suspects were identified and detained in an operation. According to the statement, the two confessed to the theft during questioning and are to be referred to court once legal procedures are completed. Separately, the Sulaymaniyah Directorate of Police said three people were detained in connection with the drowning of a young man, born in 2000, while swimming in the Chemchek River in the Zelan subdistrict of Sharbazir. The suspects, born in 1994, 1997 and 2001, were taken into custody and are being held under Article 406 of the Iraqi Penal Code as the investigation continues.
