Pentagon casualty figures from US-Iran war draw scrutiny

BAGHDAD, Iraq — The Pentagon has issued shifting casualty figures from the war with Iran, according to a Washington Post analysis. Initial official reports listed 18 dead and roughly 482 wounded, while later tallies revised the toll to 14 dead and 420 wounded, with four service members removed from the casualties list. The Pentagon said the changes were linked to the reclassification of fighting that resumed in July. A department spokesperson announced that about 100 troops had been wounded since fighting restarted, and later updates placed total wounded at around 600, with some calculations approaching 700 after separate categories were combined. A Washington Post review of satellite imagery found that Iranian missiles struck 228 US facilities or pieces of military equipment. Reuters reported that the United States expended a large share of its long-range missiles during the war, using an estimated 65 percent of its Patriot stockpiles, 38 percent of its THAAD interceptors, and significant quantities of Tomahawk cruise missiles. The US administration has requested tens of billions of dollars in additional budget funding to cover the costs of the war.
