Death toll in Congo Ebola outbreak surpasses 2,000 as cases accelerate

The death toll from the Democratic Republic of Congo's fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak has risen to 2,011, according to Health Ministry data released on Tuesday. The ministry reported 4,381 confirmed cases, with 704 patients currently receiving treatment at hospitals and isolation centers. The outbreak was officially declared on May 15, and the pace of fatalities has quickened sharply. The first 1,000 deaths were recorded over roughly nine weeks, while the most recent 1,000 occurred in only three weeks, highlighting the challenges aid teams face in reaching remote areas. The World Health Organization said the outbreak began in February and was detected late by authorities in one of the country's most isolated regions. The current epidemic is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus and has no approved vaccine or treatment. Ebola was first identified in 1976 near a river of the same name in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. The latest outbreak is the country's 17th and largest on record.
