PARIS, France โ Paris authorities have rolled out an extensive security operation ahead of Saturday's 2022 World Cup quarterfinal between France and Morocco, a match French intelligence services have classified as carrying "special risk" because of its sporting and fan sensitivities. The Paris police prefecture has prepared an expanded security plan to address potential public order violations, according to Le Parisien.
Under the plan, drones will conduct reconnaissance flights over the capital, while fireworks and flammable substances will be banned during the match. More than 20,000 police officers will be deployed nationwide, with 8,000 stationed in Paris. Heavy security measures will be in place along the Champs-รlysรฉes and at other key points in the city.
Some business owners have boarded up shopfronts with wooden panels in anticipation of possible looting and vandalism. Authorities have flagged the match as "high risk," citing the large Moroccan community in France. No further details on specific threat assessments were immediately available.
