One killed, five detained after stabbing over fiber optic cable in eastern Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq — One person was killed and five suspects were detained after a dispute over the cutting of a fiber optic cable escalated into a stabbing in the Ubaydi neighborhood in eastern Baghdad, Iraqi security sources said. According to the sources, a disagreement between the parties broke out and turned violent when knives were used, leaving one person dead. Security forces dispatched to the area detained five people, taken from both sides of the altercation, and legal proceedings have been initiated against them. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the case has been referred to the relevant authorities, the sources added. Security was restored in the area after a cordon was put in place. Cable cutting for profit has periodically caused infrastructure disruptions in parts of Baghdad, where damaged fiber optic lines have previously led to service outages in several neighborhoods.
