BASRA, Iraq โ New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said his administration is reviewing with its legal team whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could be arrested if he travels to the city for the United Nations General Assembly. Mamdani told the New York Times that the city's law department is examining the matter, adding that his administration will act within the limits of the law and will not step outside the legal framework.
The mayor said Netanyahu "belongs in The Hague," referring to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for the Israeli leader. During his election campaign, Mamdani pledged to seek Netanyahu's detention if the prime minister visited the city.
Mamdani said the scope of the city's authority under international law still needs to be clarified, and that no action will be taken before the legal review is completed. He did not specify a timeline for the review or comment on whether Netanyahu is confirmed to attend the UN General Assembly.
