NATO fighter jets shoot down drone over Latvian airspace

NATO warplanes shot down a drone that entered Latvian airspace, the Latvian military said. The armed forces announced on the X platform that the air alert was lifted after the interception. The military did not identify the origin of the drone but said Russian electronic warfare activities in the Baltic Sea region may have altered its course. It suggested the drone could have belonged to Ukraine and veered off route due to Russian jamming. NATO member states rotate the responsibility of policing the airspace of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, with the alliance's larger members providing fighter jets for the mission. Latvia, a NATO and European Union member with a population of about 1.9 million, shares a border with Russia to its east.
