Study finds vanilla flavoring in e-cigarettes may disrupt fetal development

Laboratory experiments at the University of California, Riverside suggest that vanillin, a common flavoring in electronic cigarettes, can interfere with the early stages of fetal development. Researchers exposed human embryonic stem cells, which share key features with embryos at the third week of pregnancy, to the compound. Micromolar concentrations of vanillin caused cell death, while nanomolar doses stripped the cells of their ability to differentiate into specialized cell types, according to the study. Professor Talbot, who led the research team, said the changes could prevent an embryo from developing normally. The team identified the TRPV4 protein in fetal cell membranes as the point of interaction with vanillin. When the protein's function was blocked, vanillin's effect on the cells disappeared, the researchers reported. The authors cautioned that the findings were obtained in a laboratory setting and do not confirm that the same effects occur in pregnant women. Even so, they said the work may help explain links previously observed between e-cigarette use and difficulty conceiving or miscarriage. Talbot advised pregnant women, particularly those facing fertility problems or miscarriage risk, to avoid e-cigarettes. The study was published in the journal Human Reproduction.
