SAMAWA, Iraq โ€” Worshippers gathered in the streets and squares of Samawa on the seventh day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, to hold mourning processions for the Ahl al-Bayt, the household of the Prophet Muhammad. Footage circulated by media showed large crowds performing rituals associated with mourning Imam Hussein and the Ahl al-Bayt, reading supplications and reciting prayers as they marked the observance. The seventh of Muharram falls in the run-up to Ashura, the day commemorating the killing of Imam Hussein at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. The Samawa procession was recorded as part of mourning events in the nearby district of al-Musanniyya, south of the city. In Iraq, the first of Muharram, which marks the beginning of the new Hijri year, is recognized as an official public holiday. Organizers said participants upheld traditions that have continued through generations, with collective prayers read aloud during the gathering. No further details on the size of the crowds or additional programs in the province were immediately available.
