Thousands Gather at Karbala Shrines to Mark Anniversary of Imam Hussein's Death

KARBALA, Iraq — Mourners gathered at the shrines of Imam Hussein and his brother Abbas in Karbala to observe the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein and his companions. Visitors congregated in and around the shrine courtyards to pray, recite the Quran, and perform traditional lamentations in remembrance of the deceased. Security forces implemented crowd control measures at the entrances and exits of the shrines to manage the large influx of pilgrims. Local authorities established temporary stations to provide water and health services to visitors. To mark the occasion, the shrines' lighting and surrounding decorations were changed to black and dark tones. Local hospitals and volunteer medical teams were placed on standby to handle potential emergencies.
