Meta AI Exploitation Linked to Instagram Account Hijackings

Reports have emerged of an ongoing campaign to hijack Instagram accounts, with researchers linking the attacks to exploitation of Meta's AI-powered chat application. Early last week, attackers claimed to have taken control of numerous prominent Instagram accounts using the Meta AI tool. Multiple social media users also reported their accounts had been compromised during the same period. A technology publication reported that the methods were relatively simple: attackers told the AI tool they were the account owners and attempted to link an email address to the accounts. Among the affected accounts were those with short and rare usernames, which can be resold on the black market, according to the reports. Meta said it had addressed the bug, yet accounts continue to be targeted.
