BAGHDAD, Iraq โ Economist Nabil Mersumi on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, challenged statements on the number of staff working for the Iraqi Parliament and its affiliated bodies and on their salary allocations.
In a note published in Baghdad, Mersumi said the figures he had used earlier were based on three-year budget tables. He said those figures put the workforce at about 12,500 and the annual salary allocation for 2025 at 551 billion dinars.
Mersumi said the Parliamentโs response contained inconsistencies between the numbers it presented. If the Parliamentโs figure were correct, he said, the average monthly salary for each employee would rise to about 14 million dinars.
He also criticized the response for focusing on a threat to take the matter to court rather than on the numerical details.
