KUWAIT CITY, Kuwait — KUWAIT CITY — Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry summoned Iran’s ambassador, Mohammad Toutonchi, on Thursday to protest an attack on a Kuwaiti tanker in the Strait of Hormuz the previous day, a ministry spokesperson said. Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Hamad al-Maysan told the envoy that Iran’s increasingly aggressive posture since February 28, 2026 was unacceptable. A formal protest note delivered to the Iranian side said the attack during passage through the strait violated Kuwait’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and international maritime security, and amounted to a clear breach of the United Nations Charter and Security Council Resolution 2817. The note demanded that Iran immediately halt its illegal actions and said Kuwait reserved the right to take all necessary measures. The Kuwaiti Army announced that air defense systems had been placed on engagement rules in the afternoon against missile and drone threats following the incident. The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said emergency teams responded to fires at several power generation and water treatment facilities that were targeted, with repair work already underway. No further details were immediately available on casualties or the extent of the damage.
