JERUSALEM โ Israel's parliament approved a bill in its first reading on Monday tightening rules on the use of loudspeaker systems in mosques, according to Israeli media reports. The legislation passed with 50 votes in favor and 36 against.
The bill sets conditions for operating sound systems in mosques and grants police authority to intervene in violations and seize non-compliant equipment. Worship venues operating loudspeakers without the required permits or in breach of the established conditions would face financial penalties.
Supporters of the measure said its aim is to reduce noise, while critics argued that it restricts religious freedom. The bill still requires completion of committee review and passage in second and third readings before it can become law.
