An Israeli intelligence assessment has raised the possibility that Iran could launch an unexpected attack if it detects any U.S. preparation for a strike against it in the Gulf or elsewhere in the region. The assessment says Tehran may respond with rockets and drones to preempt such an operation, making the warning a matter of immediate military concern.
Because of that risk, early warning systems have been reinforced within military intelligence, the air force and the operations units of the general staff. The move is intended to improve detection and response to any rapid Iranian escalation.
The planning unit and senior officers have also increased contacts with U.S. officials to expand information-sharing on unusual developments in Iran. Israeli authorities are seeking closer coordination as part of their monitoring of possible Iranian activity.
The Israeli army has previously created a surprise effect in operations against Iran, and the assessment says a similar step is not being ruled out in the current climate. That history is cited as one reason the intelligence warning is being treated seriously.
