Iraqi photographer documents girl paddling to school through the marshes

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraqi photographer Hamed al-Shaher has captured an image of a girl using a traditional boat to reach her school through the country's southern marshes, a landscape on the United Nations list of shared natural heritage. In an interview with CNN Arabic, al-Shaher said the frame condenses the rhythms of marshland life, where water serves both as a basic element of daily living and as the route children take to class. Al-Shaher said he began documenting life in southern Iraq, particularly the communities around the marshes, because of his personal ties to the region. He described his work as an effort to record those details before further environmental change alters them. According to a statement from the United Nations Development Programme, Iraq's marshes and their surrounding communities face environmental degradation, infrastructure shortages and the negative effects of climate change, alongside political, social, economic and security pressures.
