Iraqi Parliament to convene session on three draft laws

BAGHDAD, Iraq — The Iraqi Parliament opened the eighth session of its second legislative term on Tuesday with three draft laws on the agenda, according to the Council's press office. The chamber is scheduled to complete the first reading of a draft law on child welfare, conduct the first reading of a proposed second amendment to the Mukhtars Law, and hold the second reading, report and debate of the 22nd amendment to the Civil Servants Law. Lawmaker Hediya al-Haykani said the proposed amendment to the Mukhtars Law was submitted under Articles 60/second and 61/first of the Iraqi Constitution and aims to ensure Mukhtars receive equal treatment with other segments of society. Lawmaker Murtada al-Saidi said the 22nd amendment to the Civil Servants Law would align job titles with academic qualifications and create new cadre titles suited to modern professional developments. Lawmaker Muhammad al-Haffaji added that the amendment, prepared through correspondence with ministries and institutions, addresses cadre titles not covered by previous regulations, including regulatory officers and judicial protection officers. The completion of the first reading of the child welfare draft is intended to bring the legislation into a modern and updated legal framework.
