Iraqi parliament endorses report on Basra fisherman’s death

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq’s parliament on Tuesday completed the formal reading of a Security and Defense Committee report on the death of a fisherman in Basra during the third session of the second legislative phase. Lawmakers unanimously adopted the committee’s recommendations after reviewing the report’s findings. Parliamentary records show the recommendations include the dismissal of the Navy Commander. Other measures tied to the case were also approved as part of the broader review of the incident. In the same session, MPs completed the first reading of a draft law amending Article 22 of the 1960 Civil Service Statute No. 25 and a separate bill on the third amendment of the Lawyers’ Union Law. Officials said the adopted recommendations would help identify those responsible and trigger the required legal proceedings. Parliamentary sources added that security and human rights files will remain on the legislature’s agenda.
