BAGHDAD, Iraq โ Iraq's Counter-Terrorism Service said it captured a suspected Islamic State (ISIS) militant in Tarmiya, north of the capital. The unit said the suspect had been active in the so-called "Anbar province" network before moving to Baghdad, where he held several positions within ISIS ranks, most recently serving as a "security district commander."
According to the Counter-Terrorism Service statement, the arrest followed intelligence-based field surveillance. The suspect is accused of carrying out multiple attacks against security forces and civilians before relocating to the capital.
The service described the operation as "high-quality" and said the investigation is continuing. Tarmiya sits on the northern edge of Baghdad, an area that has seen repeated security operations targeting extremist cells.
