BAGHDAD, Iraq โ€” Iraq has been awarded two slots in the Gulf Champions League for the 2026-2027 season following the Gulf Football Union's upgrade of Iraqi clubs to Category A status. Erbil, which finished third in the Iraqi league, and fourth-placed Zawra will represent Iraq in the competition. The decision reflects the recent success of Iraqi clubs in Gulf-level competitions. Duhok claimed the championship during its first participation, while Zaho advanced to the semi-finals of the most recent season. These results demonstrated an improvement in Iraqi football's standing within the Gulf region. Under Category A rules, the Gulf Football Union permits two clubs from the same country to compete. In addition to their Gulf League representation, Iraqi clubs will also feature in Asian competitions. League champion Quwa al-Jawiya will participate in the AFC Champions League Elite, while runner-up Police has earned a place in the AFC Champions League 2. With both continental and Gulf slots accounted for, four Iraqi clubs will represent the country across international competitions next season.
