Iraq widens crackdown on unlicensed encrypted TV broadcast systems

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq's Media and Communications Commission said operations targeting unlicensed encrypted television broadcast systems are continuing, with technical teams conducting inspections in coordination with judicial and security authorities. The commission said the action is based on its authority under Legal Regulation No. 65 of 2004 and will continue until all unlicensed activity is halted. The commission urged the public not to subscribe to terrestrial TV broadcast services that rely on such systems, to refrain from purchasing their devices and from signing contracts with their operators. It warned that subscribers face the risk of losing their money without any legal protection. The authority stressed that importing, selling, promoting or operating the devices carries legal liability for those involved. Citizens were asked to use only officially licensed services and to report unlicensed broadcasters or any outlets promoting them to the commission.
