BAGHDAD, Iraq โ Iraq has unveiled a strategic plan to raise tourism's share of gross domestic product to 10% by 2035, aiming to diversify its oil-dependent economy. The plan was announced in Baghdad and developed with foreign partners, including a German institution, as part of efforts to broaden the country's economic base beyond hydrocarbons.
Officials said the strategy focuses on expanding tourism infrastructure and developing historic, religious and natural sites to generate revenue. Updating regulations for foreign investors is also on the agenda as part of the broader push to attract capital to the sector.
Tourism currently plays a marginal role in Iraq's economy, with the country relying heavily on oil revenues for government income. The plan is intended to reduce that dependence by channeling investment into sites ranging from ancient heritage locations to religious destinations visited by pilgrims each year.
Details on the implementation timeline and stages of the strategy are expected to be finalized in the coming period.
