Iraq sets whistleblower reward at 5% of recovered public funds

BAGHDAD, Iraq — The Iraqi government is moving to activate its Whistleblower Law, offering informants up to 5% of public funds recovered through their tips, government spokesman Haydar al-Abboudi said. Abboudi clarified that the reward is calculated only on the amount actually recovered and eligible under the law, not on the total sum of compensation claimed from the accused. He reported that authorities have received 26,000 reports during the ongoing anti-corruption campaign, leading to the return of 1.359 trillion dinars to the state treasury. The figures were presented during a recent briefing hosted by the Federal Integrity Authority for Prime Minister Ali al-Ziyadi. Abboudi said activating the law would encourage citizens and public employees to report corruption and help shield state financial resources from risk. The spokesman stressed that anti-corruption efforts cannot rest with the government alone, naming the Higher Judicial Council, the Federal Integrity Authority and the Court of Audit as strategic partners alongside Iraqi citizens.
