Iraq runs three-pronged campaign against tick-borne hemorrhagic fever

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq's Ministry of Agriculture is carrying out a three-pronged program to combat tick-borne hemorrhagic fever across all governorates except Kirkuk, a senior official said. Veterinary Department Director General Mohammed Aziz told the state news agency that the disease has been present in the country for years, with cases peaking between April and September. The first pillar of the campaign centers on free spring and autumn spraying drives aimed at eliminating ticks by treating livestock and farmland. Under the second pillar, hospital teams conduct health-awareness outreach targeting butchers, farmers, rural women and middle school students. The third pillar asks local authorities to curb uncontrolled slaughtering, require that slaughtering be carried out in abattoirs, and bring stray dogs — which carry ticks — under control. Aziz said meat should be refrigerated for at least seven hours after slaughter, as the resulting rise in acidity destroys the virus. He added that all animals should be treated as potential carriers. The ministry said the measures have cut case numbers by up to 70 percent.
