BAGHDAD, Iraq โ Munir Haddad, legal adviser to the Iraqi Prime Minister, said more than $2 trillion in public funds has been stolen from Iraq since 2003, according to the Iraqi News Agency. The figure covers sums transferred illegally out of state revenues, the agency reported.
Haddad announced the scale of the theft of public resources but did not provide a breakdown of the losses by category. His remarks come amid continued debate over financial management and oversight in the post-2003 period.
Earlier international and domestic reports had already pointed to large-scale losses of Iraqi public funds, and various mechanisms have been introduced to track sums believed to have been moved abroad during that period.
No official roadmap has yet been shared for investigations or recovery efforts following Haddad's announcement.
