Iraq opens new Baghdad–Karbala route for Arbaeen visitors

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq's Security Media Cell announced on July 26, 2026 that a new transport route has been opened to ease the movement of visitors traveling from Baghdad to Karbala. The route, identified as the Baghdad–Fadhiliyah Bridge–Jarfi al-Nasar road, was made accessible to traffic heading toward Karbala from 2:00 p.m. on the same day. Officials said the corridor has been activated as part of security and service plans covering the fortieth visit to the shrine of Imam Hussein. The Security Media Cell stated that the new road is intended to accelerate the safe arrival of visitors and to reduce congestion on the main highways used during the pilgrimage. According to the cell, the opening is designed to balance traffic load across the primary routes by diverting vehicles away from the busiest corridors. Visitors heading to Karbala were informed they may use the newly opened segment. The Security Media Cell reiterated that ensuring visitor safety and the smooth flow of transport remains a priority.
