Iraq’s Minister of Communications, Mustafa Sand, has directed relevant authorities to implement free Wi-Fi services at major religious sites to support pilgrims and visitors. The initiative will provide weekly internet access every Thursday and Friday throughout the year in Najaf, Karbala, Baghdad’s Karkh district, Samarra, and other designated holy locations.
Service coverage will expand during significant religious observances, including the Prophet’s birthday, Eid al-Ghadir, and the Sha'ban pilgrimage. These measures are part of a broader effort to enhance digital connectivity for the millions of visitors who frequent these sites annually.
Looking toward 2026, the ministry is developing a comprehensive infrastructure plan to support the Ashura and Arba'een pilgrimages. This strategy includes extending high-speed internet access to all national border crossings and primary entry corridors.
To support the project, Minister Sand has mandated that participating telecommunications companies develop appropriate advertising campaigns and promotional materials. The initiative aims to facilitate better communication and administrative coordination for travelers entering the country during peak religious events.
