BAGHDAD, Iraq โ€” Iraq's Media and Communications Commission has told news outlets to rely exclusively on official sources when reporting on corruption cases, warning that publishing unverified names or claims could trigger legal action under existing regulations. In a written statement, the regulator said media organizations must adhere to professional and legal standards to safeguard individuals' rights, and urged outlets to avoid circulating names or information not confirmed by official authorities. The commission said the presumption of innocence is a fundamental principle in journalism and called on outlets to follow professional standards when covering corruption files and ongoing investigations. It warned that publishing individuals' names based on unverified information would constitute a clear violation of professional and regulatory rules. Outlets that breach the directive could face legal proceedings under applicable legislation, the commission said, adding that reliance on official sources protects the public from inaccurate information and strengthens media credibility. The regulator said it would continue to uphold the principles of professional responsibility and the rule of law in reporting practices.
