Iraq is experiencing an increase in dust storms and a decline in green spaces, heightening environmental risks across the country. Environmental expert Murtaza al-Janubi warns that the nation currently lacks a comprehensive national policy to combat desertification and the degradation of vegetation degradation.
Existing mitigation efforts remain fragmented and temporary, failing to address the root causes of the crisis. The situation is further exacerbated by dwindling water resources, the mismanagement of agricultural lands, and a significant decrease in annual rainfall.
These environmental pressures are placing increasing strain on public health, the national economy, and food security. Al-Janubi emphasizes the urgent need for a long-term strategic plan to restore degraded lands and strengthen water management systems.
Proposed solutions include expanding afforestation programs using indigenous, drought-resistant plant species. While environmental protection requires a collective effort between the government and the public, current levels of environmental awareness remain limited.
