Iraq arrests Baghdad deputy mayor in Najaf on corruption charges

NAJAF, Iraq — A security unit under the Najaf Police Directorate detained a deputy mayor of Baghdad's Dora municipality during an operation in the city on Thursday, Iraqi authorities said. The suspect was wanted by the Anti-Corruption Commission and was being sought on a fugitive warrant from the justice system, according to the Najaf directorate. After his presence in Najaf was confirmed, security forces moved in and carried out the arrest on the spot. Officials did not provide details on the charges against the suspect, who was handed over to the judicial authorities following his detention. They said the investigation is ongoing and that the case remains under the supervision of the Anti-Corruption Commission. The operation reflected coordinated tracking between Baghdad and Najaf authorities, the directorate added.
