BAGHDAD, Iraq โ Brigadier General Hamid Resen has been appointed commander of Iraq's Navy, security sources said Wednesday. He replaces Mazin Kebyan, who was removed from the post earlier in connection with an incident in Kuwaiti waters in which Iraqi fishermen were fired upon, one fisherman was killed and several others were detained.
Kebyan's dismissal followed a recommendation by the Iraqi parliament's Security and Defense Committee, which was subsequently approved, according to the sources. The sources said Iraq's defense authorities had formally implemented the appointment of Resen, completing the leadership change at the Navy Command.
No further details on the circumstances of the appointment were immediately available.
