Iran sets terms for reopening Strait of Hormuz in Oman-mediated plan, Reuters reports

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Iran is conditioning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz on taking control of inbound shipping traffic and monitoring outbound transits under a temporary arrangement being discussed with Oman, Reuters reported, citing an Iranian source involved in talks with the United States. The source described the framework as the current "general idea" under negotiation, saying vessels would exit through a corridor between Iran and Oman, with Oman issuing exit clearance after Tehran is notified. The source said Tehran has stepped back from its initial demand for full control of two-way traffic through the strait. Last month, Iran rejected an Omani proposal to split transit routes evenly between the two countries, arguing it did not address security concerns until long-term stability is achieved in the region. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said a deal to reopen the strait could be reached by Wednesday and would help stabilize and bring down energy prices. On the Iranian side, Said Urjuli, a member of the media committee of Iran's negotiating delegation, told the Fars news agency that no direct talks with the United States are taking place and that current contacts are limited to Omani counterparts under the fifth article of a memorandum of understanding.
