BASRA, Iraq โ Iran said on Friday that five bridges in the southern province of Hormozgan were targeted in US strikes. Iranian state television reported that the United States had hit the bridges in recent hours.
The Wall Street Journal, citing an American official, said the strikes were carried out on Thursday and were aimed at cutting supply routes to Bandar Abbas, a port Iran has used to attack ships. The semi-official Fars news agency reported that the death toll from the bombings in Bandar Khamir, a town in Hormozgan, had risen to seven.
The strikes focused on transportation lines in southern Hormozgan, according to information from the area. US authorities had not issued an official statement on the operation as of publication.
The attacks come amid weeks of rising tensions in the Persian Gulf between Iran and the United States.
