Gunmen attack demolition team in Iraq's Maysan, one seriously wounded

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Gunmen attacked a municipal demolition team removing unauthorized structures in the center of Amara district in Iraq's Maysan province, wounding one municipal employee seriously, a security source from the Maysan police directorate said. The attackers fled the scene in an unknown direction, according to the source. Security forces have launched an investigation and an operation to track down the perpetrators, the source added. The demolition work was being carried out by the Commission for the Removal of Unauthorized Structures, which operates under the Cumayeri municipality. In a separate incident, another security source said a 19-year-old man died by hanging in the Bab al-Bayaz area on the right bank of Mosul in Nineveh province. The source said the young man, who lived with his mother, was found hanged on the upper floor of the family home. Preliminary investigation findings indicate the death was linked to psychological, family and economic pressures, the source said. A joint committee comprising the Forensic Medicine Department and the relevant security units has been formed to investigate.
