Global Carbon Pricing Revenue Hits Record $107 Billion in 2025

Global revenue from carbon emission pricing reached a record $107 billion in 2025, representing a 2% increase over the previous year. The average price of carbon rose to approximately $21 per metric ton, doubling the rate observed between 2016 and 2026. This growth was primarily driven by rising prices within emission trading systems. Currently, approximately 30% of greenhouse gas emissions are subject to direct carbon pricing through 87 different policy frameworks. An increasing number of countries are expanding the use of carbon taxes and emission trading systems to ensure polluters bear the financial cost of their emissions.
