BERLIN, Germany โ Germany has raised its security alert level to "high threat" in response to mounting intelligence reports, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt told Welt am Sonntag. Dobrindt said attack plans targeting the country could now be clearly identified, adding that the decision reflects the need to treat the risk of an attack on German soil as a constant possibility.
The minister pointed to threats directed at German infrastructure, citizens and institutions, without providing details of specific plots. The new alert level signals a heightened state of vigilance across security agencies.
The move comes weeks after a Saudi doctor was sentenced to life in prison for driving a car into a crowd at a Christmas market in the eastern city of Magdeburg on Christmas Eve 2024, killing six people and injuring hundreds. In a separate case last year, a German court convicted a Syrian national of a knife attack inspired by ISIS methods at a festival in the western city of Solingen in 2024, which killed three and wounded 10.
