Former French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced his candidacy for next year’s presidential election during an event in the village of Mur-de-Barrez. Attal, who previously served as the youngest prime minister in French history, stated his intention to move beyond current political approaches that he characterized as managing the country's decline.
Attal enters the race as a representative of centrist politics, aiming to counter the influence of the far-right in rural regions. He joins a field of candidates that includes former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe and left-wing politician Jean-Luc Melenchon.
The upcoming election, scheduled for April, is expected to be competitive as the far-right National Rally party seeks to secure power with either Marine Le Pen or Jordan Bardella. Attal, who became prime minister at age 34, will turn 38 in March before the vote takes place.
