Five Iron Age artifacts seized in western Iran, one suspect arrested

TEHRAN, Iran — TEHRAN — Authorities in the western Iranian city of Ilam seized five artifacts dating to the Iron Age and arrested a suspect during an anti-smuggling operation, the provincial director general for cultural heritage, tourism and handicrafts said. Farzad Sharifi said the operation was carried out in Abdanan county following police intelligence and security work. Archaeological experts confirmed the items belonged to the Iron Age after technical examination, Sharifi said. The recovered pieces include a clay vessel, two bronze rings and two bronze needles. The suspect has been referred to judicial authorities for further investigation and legal proceedings, according to Sharifi. Iranian officials have said inspections are being stepped up in historic parts of western Iran to combat illegal excavation and trafficking and protect cultural heritage.
