ZURICH โ FIFA has outlined the tiebreaker criteria that will determine which teams advance from the group stage of the 2026 World Cup. Under the format, the top two teams in each group will progress to the knockout rounds, joined by the eight best third-placed sides, who will compete in a round of 32.
If teams finish level on points, FIFA will first compare head-to-head results between the sides, followed by head-to-head goal difference and head-to-head goals scored. Should those criteria fail to separate the teams, the federation will then assess overall goal difference, total goals scored and fair-play points across all group matches.
If the tie persists after those steps, the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking will be used as the final decider. The same sequence โ points, goal difference, goals scored and fair-play points across all group matches โ will apply when ranking the eight best third-placed teams, with the World Ranking again serving as the ultimate tiebreaker.
