WASHINGTON, United States โ An explosion was heard near Kharg Island in Iran on Saturday, according to local reports. The semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that the sounds were caused by the controlled demolition of unexploded ordnance.
This explanation followed an announcement by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps public relations unit in Bushehr on Friday, stating that controlled demolition operations would take place Saturday to neutralize unexploded bombs remaining in the city.
The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions. A conflict between Iran and the United States and Israel began on February 28, 2026, with initial assessments indicating more than 3,000 casualties. Washington and Tehran reached agreement on a two-week ceasefire beginning April 8, which was subsequently extended. Allegations of ceasefire violations have continued, with President Trump describing the ceasefire as being "in intensive care."
