A gastroenterology specialist has warned that even small amounts of alcohol can elevate the risk of colon cancer. Andrey Simakov said there is no safe dose of alcohol, noting it is a risk factor for multiple cancer types, including cancers of the liver, stomach, esophagus, and intestines. Simakov said alcohol negatively affects bacterial balance in the intestines and significantly accelerates intestinal movements. In patients with brain-gut axis disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia, even small amounts of alcohol can worsen symptoms, triggering heartburn, bloating, pain, and diarrhea. The damage caused by alcohol depends on both frequency and dose, according to Simakov. He said the impact may be limited if consumption remains occasional, but regular alcohol intake would negatively affect the digestive system. Simakov also identified five warning signs to monitor in stool, with blood being the most dangerous indicator. Black discoloration, frequent diarrhea, fatty stool, and constipation were cited as other warning signs requiring attention.
