Endocrinologist and nutrition consultant Anton Polyakov has cautioned that tomatoes, despite their high nutritional value, are not suitable for everyone. He said the fruit stimulates bile secretion and can aggravate symptoms in people with gallstone complaints. Polyakov also warned that tomatoes can raise uric acid levels in the body, increasing the risk of gout, and that excessive intake may worsen symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. He added that the organic acids in tomatoes can irritate the stomach lining. The specialist said the effect can be particularly pronounced in patients with active stomach ulcers or gastritis. He recommended that people avoid tomato consumption during flare-ups of gastritis, stomach ulcers, gallstones and gout, though no further medical guidance was detailed in his remarks.
