Persistent unemployment and poverty in Iraq’s resource-rich southern provinces are driving a significant wave of internal migration toward major urban centers. Economic analyst Raad al-Masudi identified the decline of the agricultural sector, exacerbated by severe drought and soil salinity, as a primary catalyst for this demographic shift. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that approximately 21,000 families across 12 provinces have been displaced due to the compounding effects of economic instability and climate change. Data indicates that 74% of these displaced households are relocating to urban centers in search of better living conditions. Provinces including Dhi Qar, Maysan, Qadisiyah, and Muthanna are experiencing the most intense influx of migrants into their central cities. This rapid urbanization places additional strain on municipal infrastructure and services in these regions. Experts emphasize that addressing the root causes of this migration requires the implementation of strategic solutions to revitalize the rural economy. Long-term stability in the south depends on rehabilitating the agricultural sector and mitigating the environmental degradation currently displacing local populations.
