KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of the Congo โ The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has banned public gatherings in four regions, including the capital, Kinshasa. Interior Minister Jacquemain Shabani announced the decision in a letter to local authorities, citing the spread of an Ebola outbreak in the northeast of the country.
The ban comes ahead of a protest planned by the opposition for July 8 in Kinshasa. The demonstration is intended to oppose President Felix Tshisekedi's plans to remain in power. Under the current constitution, Tshisekedi's second and final term is set to end in December 2028.
In early June, Parliament approved a proposal for a constitutional referendum. This move is viewed as a step that could allow the 63-year-old president to seek a third term.
Opposition groups previously protested the initiative in the capital on June 12, describing the move as a "constitutional coup." At least one person was killed by security forces during that demonstration.
